Suitably, unlike the black and white covers of the first two, this is in full colour as are 160 of the photographs with 55 in black and white. Many of them are rare and not previously published and Martin makes it easy for the reader with clear captions and often brief descriptions and explanations of the main features of the aircraft.       A big bonus, as in the earlier books, are Martin’s full page scale drawings. They are a real labour of love. It must have taken ages of careful work to produce coloured drawings of 122 gliders. Apart from giving enjoyment and a better idea of the finer points of the designs, they must be a boon to the model makers.       As usual with books from this publisher, the presentation is superb and the quality of the illustrations perfect. It kicks off with a little reflection, a general survey of the gliding scene, changes in competitions over the 35 years and continues with a clear explanation of the major aerodynamic and structural developments that have a brought a vast improvement.
